Tips for Wedding Dress Shopping

We know that wedding planning can be extremely stressful! Between budgets, choosing the right vendors, and figuring out all the pieces to the “wedding day” puzzle, it’s easy to turn exciting moments into stressful ones. At Simply Stunning by Divas, we want to make sure that wedding dress shopping is exciting and stress-free. Today we’re sharing tips for wedding dress shopping in hopes that your dress shopping is smooth sailing! We can’t wait to help you say yes to the dress.

1. GATHER INSPIRATION | Once you have said “yes!” it’s time to start thinking about saying “yes!” to the dress! Now is a good time to pick up a wedding magazine, peruse Pinterest, or take a look on wedding websites to gather inspiration for what you think you would like your wedding dress to look like. Having inspiration or photos of dresses you like is important when it comes time to your wedding dress appointment. This allows your consultant to see the styles you like and help guide you in the right direction in store. Tip: Create a secret Pinterest board to store all of your wedding dress inspiration!

2. KNOW YOUR BUDGET | Just like anything else, having a budget is key when shopping for a wedding dress. You don’t want to have champagne taste on a beer budget and end up disappointed! Let your consultant know ahead of time what your max budget is so everyone is aware. Also, do not try on anything beyond your budget… it would be WAY too tempting if you fell in love with it! At Simply Stunning by Divas we strive to respect your budget while making you feel incredible in the dress you choose.

3. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT | Once you have gathered inspiration and know your budget it’s time to schedule your appointment. While we don’t require appointments, securing an appointment will give you dedicated time with a consultant and will make your experience MUCH better. You can read more about the appointment process on our FAQ post HERE.

4. KNOW YOUR TIMELINE | It’s important to keep in mind the timeline for your wedding when shopping for wedding dresses. If your wedding is less than 6 months away, you may incur rush fees on your dress. We also offer certain dresses to be purchased off the rack. During your appointment let your consultant know your wedding date and if you will be taking bridal portraits before your wedding. If so, your wedding date will actually be your bridal portrait date. We touch on this subject a bit more in our FAQ post HERE.

5. BRING APPROPRIATE SHOES & UNDERGARMENTS | It’s important to bring a pair of heels when trying on dresses so you can get a good idea of the length. It’s also important to bring appropriate undergarments (i.e. a strapless bra and underwear) so you can get a better idea of how the dress will look and fit. Your consultant may also be in the room with you at times, so make sure you are comfortable in your undergarments!

6. BE OPEN TO TRYING ON DIFFERENT STYLES | Everyone says to keep an open mind when trying on dresses, because the one you didn’t expect to love can easily become “the” dress! Be open to trying on different styles if your consultant suggests it. The job of our consultants is to help guide you and pickup on your likes/dislikes. There may be a designer or dress style that the consultant knows about that could very well be “the” one!

7. THINK ABOUT WHO YOU WANT TO BE THERE WHEN YOU SAY YES | Are you a very private person? Then you probably don’t want 5 people there with you when you try on dresses! Also ask the shop how many people they allow, as some only allow 2-3 with you. While we do not have a “limit” on the number of people you can bring to your appointment, we always like to remind our brides that each person has their own opinion and that can be a bit overwhelming to some.

8. GO LIGHT ON THE MAKEUP | Keep in mind you are trying on very expensive dresses and out of respect you don’t want to risk getting lipstick or makeup on it. Be sure to bring a hair tie with you if you’re thinking of wearing your hair up on your wedding day. This will help you see the “big picture.”

9. THINK ABOUT YOUR VENUE WHEN PICKING THE DRESS | Try to think of the feel of your venue when choosing your dress. If you’re getting married on the beach, then a thick, layered dress is probably not the way to go. Same as if your venue is very fancy, you don’t want to go with something super casual. The venue and the dress set the mood for the entire wedding.

10. WHEN YOU SAY YES TO THE DRESS…. STOP LOOKING | Take your time saying yes to the dress. You want to be 100% sure this is the right dress for you. Once you have said yes and popped the champagne to celebrate…stop looking. Don’t go dress shopping, stop pinning new dresses, and don’t even think about saying “yes” again. Seriously! Wedding planning is stressful enough without throwing another dress into the mix.

11. HAVE FUN WITH IT! | This is the dress you are going to say “I do” and become a Mrs. in! Have fun with this memorable moment and share the excitement with those around you! A lot of brides have told us saying yes to the dress makes everything feel “real,” so soak in this special moment!

Simply Stunning by Divas FAQs

Divas opened their doors in December of 1983, but was much different than it is today. Divas began as a high-end sportswear store with locations in North Carolina, Florida, and Alabama. In 2001, our customer’s needs changed drastically and as we listened to their requests, we began introducing evening gowns and wedding dresses. Customer support was overwhelming and that’s where our passion began for making every woman feel special during every momentous occasion. We want our brides to have an unforgettable experience as they prepare for their wedding day. We specialize in providing high-end customer service and an exclusive shopping experience.

Below are a few frequently asked questions by brides and their families. We hope answering these will help make your wedding planning experience a bit easier!

Q: Do I need to make an appointment?
A: When shopping for bridal gowns, we prefer you schedule an appointment so that we can ensure there is a dressing room available. This also allows us to make sure we can help you as best we can during the appointment. Unlike other bridal salons, we pride ourselves on each bride being scheduled with a bridal consultant, ensuring a personalized experience.

Q: How long are appointment times?
A: Simply Stunning by Divas is very unique in that we do not put a time limit on appointments. We believe it is most important for the bride to have the best experience possible, no matter how long that takes. Typically brides will spend 1.5-2 hours at their appointment.

Q: Can I bring a large party to my appointment?
A: For a saturday appointment, we can comfortably accommodate up to 4 guests per bride, however we do not recommend bringing any more than that as it leads to possible confusion in decision making for the bride. During the week we could absolutely accommodate a larger party. We also offer after hours appointments upon request.

Q: What should I bring to my bridal appointment?
A: When preparing for your bridal appointment, we recommend you bring the proper undergarments so that you can better see how the gowns will fit on your wedding day. It can also be helpful to bring a comfortable heel that you would feel is comparable to what you will wear on your wedding day. In addition, bringing photos of what you have been looking at online or at other stores is always helpful; this can give us a better idea of what you are envisioning for your perfect gown.

Q: What is the price range of the wedding dresses that you carry?
A: Our dresses start right around $1,400 and go up from there. There will always be a large selection of gowns between the $1,400 - $3,000 range but we do also carry some designers that are priced in the $4,000 - $5,000 range. Please let your bridal consultant know your budget so she is able to choose the best selections for you, while staying within budget.

Q: What if my budget is under $1500?
A: We are always very respectful and conscious of your budget and to help with the brides that have a one under $1500 we have a sample sale area where dresses are sold right off of the rack at a 25-50% discount

Q: What items besides wedding gowns do you carry in store?
A: In addition to wedding gowns, we carry a wide variety of mother of the bride/groom gowns and a small selection of evening gowns. Our mother of the bride/groom dresses and evening gowns range from $600-$2000. We carry the Watters and WTOO Bridesmaid collection that offers a variety of styles. In addition, we carry a selection of bridal veils, jewelry, headpieces and belts.

Q: What is the expected delivery time for wedding gowns?
A: Each dress manufacturer and designer has differing production times, but it typically takes 4-6 months to get a gown in after it has been ordered. It is important to keep in mind your timeline because there are many factors that can influence when you need your dress such as portraits date, alterations etc.

Q: What if my wedding is less than 4 months away?
A: We offer a wide selection of dresses available for purchase immediately off the floor as well as many of our manufacturers offer a rush delivery for an additional fee.

Q: When should I order my veil and accessories?
A: Depending on the designer, some accessories may take as long as the dress to come in.  We suggest trying on veils and accessories during your appointment so that you can see what they look like together. If you wish to wait to try on accessories, please keep in mind that it may be too late to order them without incurring additional rush fees from the designer.

Q: How much time should be allowed for ordering Mother of the Bride/ Mother of the Groom dresses?
A: We offer a wide selection of dresses in store by many designers. While these can be sold off the floor the day of, if it has to be ordered they also can take up to 4 months. And again, keep in mind time for alterations.

Q: How much time should be allowed for ordering bridesmaid dresses?
We always suggest that once the bride has ordered her gown to begin looking at bridesmaid dresses as soon as possible. Bridesmaid dresses can take about up to 4 months to come in. When ordering bridesmaid dresses you should also allow time for your bridesmaids to do any necessary alterations.

Q: Do you do dress fittings and alterations in your shop?
Yes, we have a highly experienced seamstress that works by appointment only.

Q: How much time should you allow for alterations to be completed?
A: Once your dress has arrived, you will need to schedule your alteration appointment(s). These appointments are typically made two months out from your wedding date. This allows you to have appointments with the seamstress and nail down any necessary changes or alterations.
Note: If you are  planning on having bridal portraits taken consider the date of those portraits your “wear date” so we can ensure all alterations are completed before then.

Q: What can I expect to pay for alterations on my wedding dress?
: Each situation is a bit different and based on the dress and the bride’s needs. With that said, the median price range of alteration is $300-$600.

Q: How is a lace dress hemmed?
A: Wedding gowns that have lace typically have the lace trim sewn on top of the hemline. The seamstress detaches the trim and reattaches it after the hemline has been shortened. In addition, we have some manufacturers that offer a lace hem unattached option which makes for less complicated alterations. We carry a few designers that offer short (or long) length options when ordering. Be sure to ask your consultant if this is something you would like to look into!
